As autumn approaches we at Nordic alchemy are thrilled to be cracking out those cosy autumn jumpers (hand knitted by bestemor), lighting one of our scrumptious scented candles and tucking in to a good book. Those frosty autumn mornings and darker nights truly bring out our inner ‘Hygge’ and allow us to indulge in all our cosy indulgences. While we may be excited about the return of autumn our skin is not. With the cold air outside and the heating cranked up indoors, it can wreak havoc with our skin, causing dryness, dullness and irritation. We’ve compiled a list of our top 10 tips to keep your skin glowing though this glorious season.

1. Switch to a Hydrating Cleanser

While gel-based cleansers are perfect for summer, autumn is the time to switch to a hydrating, creamy cleanser. Look for cleansers that contain ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid, which help retain moisture and prevent your skin from feeling tight or dry after washing.

2. Exfoliate, But Don’t Overdo It

Exfoliation is essential for smooth, bright skin, especially as dry, dead cells build up in colder months. Opt for a gentle exfoliator with lactic or glycolic acid, but limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week to avoid irritation. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin of natural oils, so make sure to follow with a good moisturiser to keep your skin balanced.

3. Layer Up on Moisturiser

Autumn demands a richer moisturiser than your lightweight summer lotions. Look for creams that are more emollient, which help lock in moisture and protect your skin from harsh winds and temperature drops. Ingredients like shea butter, squalane, and jojoba oil are perfect for replenishing dry skin. For even deeper hydration, layer with a face oil like our Alchemy of Colours Nourishing Face Oil—a luxurious blend that leaves your skin feeling soft and radiant.

4. Incorporate a Hydrating Serum

Boost your routine with a hydrating serum to combat autumn’s drying air. Serums containing hyaluronic acid work wonders by drawing moisture into the skin. Apply your serum after cleansing but before moisturising to maximise its benefits. This extra layer will help keep your skin hydrated and protected from the chilly winds.

5. Don’t Forget SPF

Autumn sun might not feel as strong, but UV rays can still damage your skin. Keep your SPF in your routine, choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Whether you’re stepping outside for a crisp autumn walk or staying indoors by a sunny window, sun protection is a year-round must.

6. Keep Your Lips Hydrated

Cooler weather means your lips are more prone to drying and cracking. To keep your lips soft, use a hydrating lip balm. We recommend our Alchemy of Colours Honey & Citrus Lip Balm, enriched with honey for extra moisture and healing properties—perfect for soothing and protecting your lips throughout the season. A nighttime lip mask can also help to repair dry lips while you sleep.

7. Stay Hydrated from the Inside Out

We know, those pumpkin spice lattes are tempting, but staying hydrated with good old-fashioned water is crucial for your skin’s health in autumn. Drinking enough water keeps your skin plump and helps flush out toxins that can cause dullness. Try herbal teas, soups, or water-rich fruits like apples or pears to help maintain hydration during the colder months.

8. Invest in a Humidifier

Indoor heating can seriously dry out your skin, so consider investing in a humidifier. This handy device helps add moisture to the air, keeping your skin hydrated while you sleep. It’s an easy way to prevent that tight, uncomfortable feeling when you wake up in the morning.

9. Focus on Your Hands and Feet

Hands and feet are often overlooked but just as vulnerable to autumn’s drying effects. Use a thick, nourishing hand cream to keep your hands soft, and treat your feet to a hydrating foot cream, especially before bed. Don’t forget to exfoliate these areas regularly to help your moisturisers penetrate more effectively.

10. Adjust Your Routine as Needed

Every skin reacts differently to the changing season, so listen to what your skin needs. If it feels drier than usual, consider adding extra layers of hydration with masks or oils. If you notice breakouts, you may need to tweak your routine.
